Wattisham is a small rural hamlet set in the Suffolk countryside. Off the beaten track, it is nestled between the village of Bildeston and the market town of Stowmarket. Its central location gives easy access to the towns of Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Sudbury.
The community meeting place is the beautifully restored village church now in the care of The St Nicholas Trust. The community “Pub Night” is held on the last Friday of each month. The event is very well attended with regulars travelling from far and wide.
Wattisham offers, among other facilities, holiday cottages, a cattery, dog sitting, a pheasant shoot and the Mallard Barn country shop offering a range of country sporting facilities. There are several footpaths around the village. Wattisham also has a small castle originally set in apple orchards. The village telephone box has recently been restored to accommodate a defibrillator.
The village cradles RAF Wattisham, an airbase that played a pivotal role during WWII. Today the base is largely used by the Army as a helicopter training station. The base has several look-out positions where enthusiasts flock to glimpse the various aircraft that visit from time to time. Nearby is a war memorial for the many RAF and USAF service personnel who served at the base.
